WIAA individual wrestling sectionals this Saturday
Like a meat grinder, a sectional wrestling meet can chew up teams with even large numbers of athletes competing in them.
Spring Valley/Elmwood knows this all to well. Last year they came into the WIAA Division 3 Independence/Gilmanton Individual Sectional with nine wrestlers and only one, Zach Newton, went to state.
But both SVE and Ellsworth are confident they'll get a good number of kids to next weekend's individual state tournament in Madison through this weekend's individual sectional meets.
No. 1 Ellsworth brings all 14 of its wrestlers to Amery for the Division 2 meet which begins at 11 a.m. No. 1 ranked Spring Valley/Elmwood will have 12 participants wrestling at Osseo-Fairchild High School is Osseo, site of the Independence/Gilmanton Team Sectional, which starts at 10 a.m.
Prescott will have five participants at Saturday's sectional meet in Amery.
The top three from each weight class qualify for state. Wrestlers must win at least two matches to qualify for state, either through the winners bracket or the consolation round. The semifinals in the winner's bracket and the third place matches in the consolation round are where trips to Madison are on the line.
Judging by the match-up in the brackets, Ellsworth has a very good chance to send one of its largest contigents ever for the state individual meet while SVE and Prescott should be able to get half or more than half their contingents to state as well.
