Wild snap long losing streak at Dallas
(Dallas, TX) -- Minnesota's Kyle Brodziak scored a shorthanded goal in the third period, which proved to be the winner as the Minnesota Wild took a 7-4 victory over the Stars in Dallas last night.
The victory was the first for Minnesota in Dallas since 2003, a span covering 16 consecutive games without a win.
Zach Parise scored twice and added an assist while Matt Cullen, Mikko Koivu, Brodziak and Pierre-Marc Bouchard each posted a goal and an assist for the Wild, who have won six straight games. Niklas Backstrom stopped 22 shots in the win. Grand Rapids native Alex Goligoski had a goal and an assist for Dallas, which had a two-game winnings halted.
The same two teams play in Dallas again on Friday night. Minnesota hosts Phoenix on Wednesday in between the two dates.
Wild forward Matt Cullen of Moorhead scored his 200th career goal in last night's 7-4 win over Dallas. With the milestone tally, Cullen became the ninth native Minnesotan to enter the 200-goal club. The veteran 36-year-old center played college hockey at St. Cloud State.
Minnesota Wild goaltender Niklas Backstrom, Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin. and Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nazem Kadri were selected as the NHL's 'Three Stars' for the week ending March 24. Ovechkin gained First Star honors, while Backstrom picked up the Second Star. The netminder went 3-0-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average, one shutout and a .972 save percentage in three starts. He bested Vancouver, Detroit and San Jose during the week, recording his 27th career whitewash in a 33-save performance in a 2-0 win over the Sharks on March 23rd. He won the award yesterday and won again last night in Dallas.
