William "Bill" F. Holst, Jr., 85
William "Bill" F. Holst, Jr., age 85, of Prescott, died Sunday, May 24, 2009, at his home.
Bill was born on Dec. 3, 1923, in Goodhue County, to William and Margaret (Zigengo) Holst, Sr.
He served in the US Marine Corp. during WWII as an MP. Bill married Helen McKinley on Sept. 25, 1948, in Red Wing. He was a lifelong farmer, who loved the land and his cattle. Bill enjoyed buying John Deere equipment. He served as Diamond Bluff town chairman for many years and was a past president of the Pierce County National Farm Organization (NFO). Bill was also a life member of the VFW in Red Wing and Marine Corp. League.
Bill is survived by his wife, Helen; sons, Mike (Sue) Holst, William (Nancy) Holst, III, Neal (Norma) Holst, Morris (Leah) Holst, Jeff (Dodie) Holst, and Richard (Jeanine) Holst; 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Gerald Holst and sister, Margaret Hasbargen.
His parents and brothers, John and Russell, preceded him in death.
Funeral services for Bill were 2 p.m. Thursday, May 28, at the Hill Funeral Home, Ellsworth. Burial was in the Oak Wood Cemetery, Red Wing. Friends and family were invited to call from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, and for one hour before the service on Thursday.
