Wilson competes in National Pro-Am at Pebble Beach
PEBBLE BEACH, Calf. - Pewaukee native Mark Wilson got off to a slow start today at the PGA's Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Wilson was at two-over-par after eight holes of his first round.
He's already a two-time champion in just over a month on this year's Tour, winning tournaments in Hawaii and Arizona. Wilson is the top player in the Fed-Ex Cup point standings - and at Pebble Beach, he's paired with NFL quarterback Drew Brees as his amateur partner for the first three rounds. Appleton native J.P. Hayes was just starting his opening round early this afternoon. He birdied the first hole. Alex Cejka and D.J Trahan had the early lead at three-under.
Wilson's giving himself a lot more early chances to win than he normally does. Wilson, who now lives in suburban Chicago, said the harsh Midwest winter made him adjust his playing schedule. He says he'll keep playing every week until late March - and he'll take one week off before his first Masters. Wilson earned his spot at Augusta by winning the Sony Open in Hawaii last month.
