Mary Lee Huber has been around Ellsworth for nearly all her life.

She was born and raised here, and spent 27 years of her teaching career in the Ellsworth School District before retiring in 2004.

Yet, as Huber is enjoying retirement, life has led her to a different path far away from Ellsworth: The sea.

"Given that I have good health and energy, once you get to retirement, the question is what's next," she explained. "I wanted to think outside the box and sailing is outside the box."

Huber has spent winters since her retirement along the Mexican coastline, each year increasing her time. This past winter, she spent three months out on the water.

"The joy of sailing is that every day is different," she said. "You're constantly learning and every place you sail to is something new."

There's another factor she enjoys about sailing.

"When the snow is two inches deep, think Mexico," she said, smiling.
