WISCONSIN SPORTS BRIEFS: Gallardo's return a win for Brewers

Email News Alerts

MILWAUKE - Starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo made the best of his return from the disabled list last night, in a 2-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds.

Gallardo (8-9) worked six-and-a-third innings, allowing only three hits and no runs. He had been on the 15-day DL, after suffering a hamstring injury a few weeks back. Manager Ron Roenicke says he was “pleasantly surprised” with Gallardo’s performance, saying it often takes time getting back into rhythm after being out with an injury so long. Closer Jim Henderson grabbed his 18th save, striking out all three batters in the ninth inning.

The University of Wisconsin football team is ranked 23rd in the first AP Top 25 poll of the season. First-year head coach Gary Andersen and several players signed some autographs and greeted fans, as part of the annual “Wisconsin Football Family Fun Day” yesterday at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison. With the season less than two weeks away and a hotly-contested quarterbacks race, the Badgers wlecome the latest poll rankings. UW was also tabbed at No. 23 for the first coaches' poll released a few weeks ago. Other Big Ten teams in the top 25 include Ohio State at 2, Michigan at 17, Nebraska at 18 and Northwestern at 22.  The team will hold another open scrimmage on Monday.
