WISCONSIN SPORTS ROUND-UP: Abbrederis out with torn ACL

Email News Alerts

GREEN BAY - Rookie wide receiver Jared Abbrederis confirms he has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.  That news put a damper on the high spirits of a crowd of more than 67,000 which showed up for the annual Family Night event.

Abbrederis, the fifth-round draft pick from Wautoma out of the University of Wisconsin, was injured at Wednesday’s practice and is expected to end his season before it got started.  The injury is the same one suffered by Bryan Bulaga on Family Night last season.  Despite a change in the format of the practice, two Green Bay Packers suffered leg injuries Saturday night – nose tackle B.J. Raji and rookie tight end Colt Lyerla.

Kolten Wong homered and knocked in three runs as the St. Louis Cardinals evened their weekend series with the Brewers by winning 9-7 Saturday night.  Wong was a last-minute insertion into the lineup.  Right-hander Justin Masterson was a winner in his first start after coming over from Cleveland in a trade.  The Cardinals led all the way, battering Milwaukee starter Kyle Lohse for a season-high nine runs.  The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Brewers.  They kept fighting back to keep the game close and had the tying run at the plate in the ninth inning.  Trevor Rosenthal struck out Carlos Gomez and the newest Brewers, Gerardo Parra, to pick up his 33rd save.  John Lackey makes his debut for the Cardinals in today’s rubber game of the series.  He will be opposed by Matt Garza.
