WISCONSIN SPORTS ROUND-UP: Badger basketballers lose second straight
MADISON - Michigan ended a string of 11 straight losses in Madison, with a 77-70 victory over the University of Wisconsin men's basketball team last night at the Kohl Center.
The Badgers dropped their second straight game after a 16-0 start -- and they're sure to tumble down the national polls tomorrow after being third a week ago. The Wolverines never trailed in the second half, and they led by as many as 15 before the Badgers got to within one with less than a minute left. Nik Stauskas then took over, hitting a three-pointer and going 6-for-6 from the foul line to seal Michigan's victory. Stauskas had a game-high 23 points. Caris LeVert added 20 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals as the Wolverines won their seventh straight game to improve to 5-0 in the Big Ten and 13-4 overall. Josh Gasser scored 16 points for the Badgers. Sam Dekker added 10 points and 10 boards, as Wisconsin fell to 3-2 in the conference and 16-2 overall.
The Marquette University men’s basketball team scored only 17 points in the final 21 minutes yesterday and lost at Butler in overtime, 69-57 in Indianapolis. The Bulldogs won their first game in their new Big East Conference, and they ended a five-game overall losing streak. Butler was down by 12 with over 16 minutes left in regulation. The Golden Eagles would score only two more field goals in regulation, as the Bulldogs went on a 15-to-3 run to take a late lead and force overtime. Butler then opened the extra period with a 12-2 run to pull away. The Eagles were out-shot 41-to-31 percent. Davante Gardner had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Marquette, which dropped to 2-3 in the conference and 10-8 overall. Kellen Dunham and Khyle Marshall each scored 18 for Butler, which improved to 1-5 in the conference and 11-7 overall.
The Milwaukee Bucks lost their eighth straight game last night, 114-104 at Houston. Terrence Jones scored a career-high 36 points for the Rockets, who came back from a humiliating loss to Oklahoma City in which they scored only 19 points in the second half. James Harden added 22 points for Houston, and Dwight Howard had 20 points and 14 rebounds. The Bucks trailed by 10 at the half. Houston led by 16 after three quarters, and they cruised the rest of the way. Brandon Knight had 26 points and seven assists for Milwaukee, which dropped to an NBA worst 7-32. The Bucks were sloppy with the ball, committing 20 turnovers which led to 26 Houston points. The Rockets improved to 27-15. The Bucks play at San Antonio tonight.
Former Green Bay Packers' safety Darren Sharper is due in court February 14th, on suspicion of sexual assault in Los Angeles. Sharper, who played eight of his 14 NFL seasons in Green Bay, was booked on Friday and released on a 200-thousand-dollar bond. L-A Police said it's investigating Sharper's possible involvement in two sexual assaults in West Los Angeles in October and earlier this month. Also, New Orleans Police said it's investigating an alleged sexual assault by Sharper last September 24th. The 38-year-old Sharper was also suspended from the NFL Network, where he's been working as an analyst. Sharper made the Super Bowl as a Packer in his rookie season of 1997. He had 36 interceptions and five touchdowns in Green Bay. Sharper then moved on to Minnesota and New Orleans, where he won a Super Bowl with the Saints in the 2009 season. Sharper retired in 2010 with six All-Pro nominations and five Pro Bowl bids.
The University of Wisconsin women's hockey team completed a two-game sweep at Bemidji State with a 3-1 victory yesterday. Alex Rigsby set a new Badger record for the most career victories as a goaltender with her 92nd, surpassing Jessie Vetter. The senior Rigsby had 19 saves, as she returned from a seven-game absence due to injury. Katy Josephs, Brittany Ammerman, and Karley Sylvester scored for Wisconsin, which improved to 15-3-2 in the W-C-H-A and 19-3-2 overall. Bemidji State dropped to 6-11-1 in the conference and 9-13-2 overall.
