WISCONSIN SPORTS ROUND-UP: Badger volleyball team loses in national title match

SEATTLE – The University of Wisconsin volleyball team’s improbable season has come to an end, falling to second-ranked Penn State in the National Championship last night.

The Badgers dropped the first two sets (19-25, 24-26) before picking up the third (25-20). Things were close in the fourth set, but the Nittany Lions scored a flurry of points to take the match and the title. Although the Nittany Lions made more service errors than UW, the Badgers’ service errors cost them leads in games two and four which cost them the match. Dominique Thompson led the Badgers with 18 points and 16 kills, Deme Morales added another 16 points and 15 kills in the loss.  Penn State won its sixth national title, tying it with Stanford for the most in NCAA history.  UW concludes its season with a 28-10 overall record.

Making his return from injury, Caron Butler scored 22 points and 11 rebounds, leading Milwaukee to a 106-96 win over Philadelphia last night. The 12-year veteran nearly played 40 minutes in his return from a knee injury. Rookie Giannis Antetokounmpo added 12 points and seven rebounds in the win. It’s the first time the Bucks have won by double-digits this season.

In a season marred with injuries, it’s hard to believe that the Green Bay Packers can clinch the NFC North with a win today and next week. They will have to do it without quarterback Aaron Rodgers today, who will miss his seventh game of the season with a broken collarbone. Head coach Mike McCarthy says the decision to sit Rodgers for today’s game was “an organization” decision. Flynn and the Packers take on the Pittsburgh Steelers on a snowy Lambeau Field this afternoon, kickoff is at 3:25.
