MADISON - The University of Wisconsin men's basketball team will host Michigan this evening at the Kohl Center, with the goal of stepping up their defense.

Associate head coach Greg Gard said the third-ranked Badgers are well aware that they need to clean up a number of things.  For one, they'll try to defend the lane better.  Indiana breezed to the hoop in its win over Wisconsin on Tuesday night, scoring 52 of its 75 points in the paint.  Like other teams, the Badgers are still trying to get comfortable with a new rule which does not allow defensive players to get in the path of an opponent who's making an upward motion with the ball -- either to pass or shoot.  Blocking fouls are now called in those situations, instead of charges.  Tonight, the Badgers will face a Michigan team that leads the Big Ten in field-goal percentage at almost 48-and-a-half.  The Wolverines are 4-0 in the Big Ten and 12-4 overall.  Wisconsin is 3-1 in the conference and 16-1 overall.

In other men's college basketball today, Marquette is at Butler, and UW-Milwaukee hosts Valparaiso.  In women's play, Wisconsin is at Northwestern.  Marquette hosts Saint John's.  UW-Milwaukee plays at Youngstown State.  UW-Green Bay is at Cleveland State.  The Parkside women-and-men are at McKendree.

The UW-Green Bay men's basketball team won its ninth straight game last night, 79-69 at Wright State.  The Phoenix shot a blistering 65-percent in the first half, but they only led by three at the break.  Green Bay restored a double-digit lead early in the second half.  The Raiders got to within one with 9:45 left but could never take the lead.  Green Bay sealed the win by making 5-of-6 from the free-throw line in the final minute.  Alec Brown scored 24 points, as the Phoenix improved to 4-0 in the Horizon League and 14-3 overall.  Reggie Arceneaux had 17 points for Wright State, which fell to 3-2 in the conference and 11-9 overall.  Green Bay will play at Illinois-Chicago tomorrow.

The Milwaukee Bucks are 0-7 in the New Year, and they'll try again for the first win of 2014 tonight at Houston.  Milwaukee is the only NBA team not to win at least one-of-every-five of their games -- and with a seven-game losing streak, they're due.  The Bucks bring a 7-31 record into the Toyota Center.  The Rockets are 26-15, but they had a major collapse in a loss to Oklahoma City on Thursday.  Houston scored a whopping 73 points in the first half, but only 19 in the final 24 minutes.  The 54-point scoring differential between the two halves was an NBA record.  Dwight Howard continues to be solid for the Rockets, after moving there in the off-season.  He averages 18 points and 12-and-a-half rebounds a night.

The Green Bay Packers are looking for a new outside linebackers' coach, after Kevin Greene announced his resignation yesterday.  After five seasons with the Pack, Greene said he wanted to step away from the NFL so he could spend more time with his wife and two children.  He's the second Packers' assistant to leave this week.  Quarterbacks' coach Ben McAdoo won a new job as the offensive coordinator of the New York Giants.  Greene is credited with helping Clay Matthews become a top-notch pass rusher ever since his rookie season.  Matthews was named to four Pro Bowls while playing for Greene.

Milwaukee Brewers' outfielder Ryan Braun will meet with fans next weekend, for the first time since his season-ending drug suspension last summer.  Braun is among almost 30 players taking part in the annual "Brewers on Deck" fan festival a week from tomorrow at the Wisconsin Center convention hall in downtown Milwaukee.  Braun called a number of season-ticket holders while he was suspended, and he spoke to reporters last fall about his reported use of synthetic testosterone in his 2011 MVP season.  Admission is free to "Brewers on Deck," but there will be charges for certain players' autographs.

__________________________

Pitcher Jordan Zimmermann will stay with the Washington Nationals.  The former UW-Stevens Point starter from Auburndale avoided salary arbitration yesterday.  He signed a two-year contract worth $24-million.  He'll get most of that in 2015, when reports say he'll get $16.5 million.  There was some talk that Zimmermann could be traded if he didn't sign a contract extension soon.  But he said he knew all along it wouldn't happen, and he's happy to get his deal finished so he can focus on baseball.  Zimmermann was the ace of the Nationals' pitching staff last year with a team-leading 19 wins and over 200 innings pitched.  He threw a one-hitter against Cincinnati in late April, and was invited to his first All-Star Game -- although he couldn't go due to an injury at the time.  Earlier yesterday, the Milwaukee Brewers reached contract deals with their only two players up for arbitration -- starter Marco Estrada and infielder Juan Francisco.

Jerry Kelly of Madison is tied for 16th place at the halfway point of the PGA's Humana Challenge in La Quinta California.  Kelly fired a seven-under-par 65 yesterday, giving him a two-round total of 10-under-134.  Patrick Reed is still the leader at 18-under-126.  Pewaukee native Mark Wilson is tied for 91st.  He shot a six-under-66 yesterday, and he's now at four-under-140 for the tournament.  This weekend's cut will be a day later than usual, to give all players a chance to play the three courses at La Quinta that are being used for the event.

The University of Wisconsin women's hockey team blanked Bemidji State on the road yesterday, 6-0.  The game was scoreless for almost 25 minutes before Karley Sylvester put the second-ranked Badgers in front to stay.  Brittany Ammermann and Katy Harding each had two goals and a assist for Wisconsin, which has now won seven of its last eight.  The Badgers improved to 14-3-2-and-1 in the WCHA and 18-3-2 overall.  Bemidji State fell to 6-10-1-1 in the conference, and 9-12-2 overall.  The two teams will close out their weekend series this afternoon in northern Minnesota.

____________________________

The Milwaukee Wave dropped to 8-2 on the season, with a 22-4 loss at Missouri last night.  The Wave came in with a league-high 17-point-four points a game, but they only scored a pair of two-point goals against the Comets.  Ian Bennett had the first, and Luan Oliveira scored the other.  The loss dropped Milwaukee into a first-place tie with Baltimore in the Major Indoor Soccer League.  The Wave will host Missouri tonight in the finale of a two-game, home-and-home series.
