WISCONSIN SPORTS ROUND-UP: Badgers spikers advance to Final Four

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - For the second time in school history, the University of Wisconsin volleyball team advanced into the Final Four of the NCAA Division I Tournament.

The Lady Badgers defeat Purdue in four sets (25-22, 25-23, 25-18, 25-21) in the regional finals at the State Farm Center and will face Texas, the defending national champions, on Thursday in Seattle. Freshman Lauren Carlini recorded a double-double with 55 assists and 10 digs. She was named regional MVP. This will be UW’s first trip to the Final Four since 2000 where they finished national runner-up to Nebraska.

UW-Whitewater is back in the Stagg Bowl, defeating Mary Hardin-Baylor 16-15 yesterday afternoon. The Warhawks rallied from a 12-0 first-half deficit to reach the national championship game. Sophomore running back Jordan Ratliffe rushed for 100 yards and two scores, including a 5-yard go-ahead touchdown run in the third quarter. Warhawks will seek a fifth national title in seven years on Friday when they face defending champions Mount Union.

Senior Ben Brust scored a season-high 20 points and six rebounds in leading the still unbeaten University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team to an 86-61 win over Eastern Kentucky yesterday afternoon at the Kohl Center in Madison. Wisconsin was impressive on defense, holding the Colonels to just 33-percent shooting for the first half. The fourth-ranked Badgers are now 12-0 and off to their best start in a century.  Saturday’s win helped this season’s Badger men’s team set the modern era (post-World War II) UW record for best start at 12-0.

CC tied the score after pulling its goalie with under two minutes to go in the third period. UW goalie Joel Rumpel made 26 saves. Navin had two assists and Dahl had an assist as well. Wisconsin remains unbeaten in its homestand and improved to 8-5-1 overall while the Tigers dropped to 2-13-3. Wisconsin is off until the weekend after Christmas when they host Alabama-Huntsville. It was the first time UW had swept CC since 1998 and no penalties were called in the game on either side.

DeJuan Blair chipped in 11 points and nine boards. John Henson recorded 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Bucks, who have lost three in a row. Brandon Knight had 16 points for Milwaukee, which trailed by as many as 34 points.

The Green Bay Packers will look for a two-game winning streak and remain in contention of a division title against Dallas this afternoon. The Packers will be without quarterback Aaron Rodgers again. Head coach Mike McCarthy ruled Rodgers out after practice on Friday, Matt Flynn will start in his place.
