WISCONSIN SPORTS ROUND-UP: Brewers top Cubs 3-1
CHICAGO - The Milwaukee Brewers have won four of their last five games, after beating the Chicago Cubs 3-1 last night at Wrigley Field.
Khris Davis doubled home the winning run in the seventh inning with a line drive to the left field corner. Mark Reynolds hit a solo shot that would have gone onto Waveland Avenue had it not been caught by an older Cubs' fan standing on the top row of the left-field bleachers. Reynolds has now belted 20 homers in each of his last seven seasons. Yovani Gallardo struck out six in seven innings, as he improved to 7-6. He gave up a run on six hits with no walks. Francisco Rodriguez pitched the ninth to get his National League-leading 36th save, and the 340th of his career. K-Rod is now one save away from tying Brewers' Hall-of-Famer Rollie Fingers for eleventh on the Majors' all-time list with 341. Jake Arrieta took the loss, giving up two runs in seven-and-a-third innings. He's now 6-4. The Cubs scored their only run on a double by Chris Coghlan down the right-field line. Starlin Castro extended his hitting streak to ten games for last-place Chicago, which dropped to 15 games behind front-running Milwaukee in the NL Central. Pittsburgh has moved into second place, two-and-a-half games back. Saint Louis is now three off the pace. The Brewers and Cubs play again tonight at Wrigley. Right-hander Wily Peralta will go for his 15th win against Cubs' right-hander Kyle Hendricks.
The Lakeshore Chinooks are up one-game-to-none in the Northwoods League South Division playoffs. The Chinooks scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning last night to beat the Wisconsin Woodchucks 9-4 in Wausau. Brett Siddall broke a 4-4 tie with an RBI-single -- and then Zack Bowers belted a grand slam. The series moves to Mequon tonight, and Lakeshore can clinch the best-of-three set with a victory. In the North Division finals, Mankato topped Willmar 7-4 in an all-Minnesota series. The Moondogs can clinch tonight when the series moves to Willmar.
State American Legion baseball champion Plover lost to Midland of Michigan 8-5 yesterday, in the title round of the Great Lakes regional Legion tournament in Terre Haute Indiana. Plover drew first blood by scoring twice in the opening frame. Midland scored three in the bottom of the first and never looked back. Plover's Ryan Makuski had a double, two singles, and a walk in five trips with an RBI and two runs scored. Plover starter Austin Schulfer took the loss, giving up six runs in two-plus innings. Adam Fitzgibbon doubled and singled for Midland, which advances to the national Legion finals next week.
Green Bay Packers' safety Morgan Burnett returned to practice yesterday, after coming off an oblique strain earlier in Training Camp. The practice was closed to fans so coach Mike McCarthy could work on more specific plays for the regular season. The crowds will be welcomed back to Ray Nitschke Field today, for a workout that begins at noon. Four players were hurt in Saturday night's exhibition loss at Tennessee -- including second-round receiver Davante Adams who injured a wrist. Linebacker Joe Thomas hurt a knee, defensive end Josh Boyd had a rib injury, and running back Rajion Neal injured a knee.
Diamond Stone of Whitefish Bay Dominican High School had a double-double yesterday, as the U.S. crushed the Philippines 124-64 at the World Under-17 basketball tournament in Dubai. Stone had 12 points and 11 rebounds in his second double-double in three games for the Americans. Henry Ellenson of Rice Lake scored 14 points off the bench, with six rebounds. It was the final game of the preliminary competition for Team USA, which went 3-0. They're playing Japan this morning in the Round-of-16.
