WISCONSIN SPORTS ROUND-UP: Dekker wants UW teammates to get tougher
MADISON - University of Wisconsin sophomore guard Sam Dekker says the Badger men have played "soft" and "un-aggressive" lately -- and that's why they've lost four-of-their-last-five. Dekker vented to assistant coach Gary Close for 45 minutes after practice yesterday, and then took his concerns to reporters.
He said players can understand losing to a team with better talent -- but it hurts to lose when a team is out-hustled. Dekker said that with the possible exception of Michigan, the Badgers should have beaten Northwestern, Indiana, and Minnesota earlier this month. He said quote, "It's time to buckle down, and time to hold ourselves accountable and not let that happen again." Associate head coach Greg Gard agrees that the Badgers have lost their intensity level too often lately. Wisconsin was ranked as high as third in the country during their 16-0 run which ended a couple weeks ago against Indiana. Wisconsin is now ranked 14th, with a 4-4 Big Ten record and a 17-4 overall mark. Tomorrow, they'll face an Ohio State team that's had similar struggles, losing five-of-their-last-six. The Buckeyes lost an overtime game to Penn State on Wednesday night, and dropped to 3-5 in the conference and 16-5 overall.
It's been just over nine years since the Milwaukee Bucks won a game in Orlando -- but tonight, they actually have a chance of ending that string. That's because the Magic has the NBA's second-worst record at 12-35. Only Milwaukee is worse, at 8-37. The Bucks have lost 14 straight games in central Florida. In most of those outings, Dwight Howard plugged up the middle. He's long gone, but the Bucks still cannot slack off in the post. That's because the Magic's current center, Nikola Vucevic, has four straight double-doubles against Milwaukee. He had 17 points and 11 rebounds when the Bucks dropped their last game at Orlando, 94-91 back on November 13th. Vucevic is averaging 22 points and 14-and-a-half boards in his last four contests against Milwaukee. He recently had a concussion, but he returned Wednesday night and had 16 points and 10 boards in a 15-point Orlando loss at Toronto. The Bucks are coming off a home loss to Phoenix on Wednesday. Milwaukee has lost four straight overall, and seven straight road games. The Magic has only won two of its last 17 games overall.
Green Bay Packers' defensive lineman Mike Daniels says he's already working on next season -- and he wants to make sure the team's younger defenders are doing the same. At the Super Bowl in New Jersey this week, Daniels said he wants to take a leadership role in his third season with the Pack. He finished second on the Packers with six-and-a-half sacks in 2013, while inspiring teammates with his hard style of play and vocal encouragement. Daniels would be the elder statesman on the defensive line if Pickett, B.J. Raji, Johnny Jolly, and C.J. Wilson do not return. Daniels said he's especially concerned about lifting up the younger defensive players that GM Ted Thompson brought in -- like Datone Jones, Casey Hayward, Nick Perry, and Jerel Worthy. Daniels said Jones was upset with a lack of playing time in his rookie year -- and he hopes that will put a fire in Jones' belly in 2014. Like others in his unit, Daniels does not blame defensive coordinator Dom Capers for Green Bay's 25th place defensive showing in the NFL last year.
Pewaukee native Mark Wilson was scheduled to begin his second round early this afternoon at the PGA's Waste Management Phoenix Open. And he's some ground to make up if he wants to stay around for the weekend. Wilson began the day at three-over-par 74. The projected cut-line as of early afternoon was at even-par 71. As of the lunch hour, Wilson was tied for 117th at Scottsdale, Arizona. Greg Chalmers was the leader at that point at 10-under.
Only a few of Wisconsin's Division III college basketball teams will play tonight. Northland College of Ashland will host a men's-and-women's double-header against North Central of Minnesota. Northland International of Dunbar has a home twin-bill on tap against Finlandia of Upper Michigan. The Maranatha Baptist women are at home in Watertown against Mount Mary of Milwaukee.
The Milwaukee Admirals will try to break a two-game losing streak tonight, when they play at Iowa. The Wild have a six-game point streak, even though they're in last place in the American Hockey League's Midwest Division. Iowa is 19-16-3-3 overall, with six victories in its last nine home contests. The Admirals are 20-13-6-3 -- and they're 4-0 against Iowa this season. The Admirals are third in the Midwest, just a point behind second-place Chicago. Milwaukee will return home to face division-leading Grand Rapids tomorrow night.
The Milwaukee Wave will play at Saint Louis tomorrow afternoon. Milwaukee is still in first place in the Major Indoor Soccer League standings at 10-2. The Wave are coming off a 21-9 home victory over Saint Louis last weekend. Marcio Leite had a hat trick in that game -- and for that, he was named to the MISL's Team-of-the-Week. Leite is seventh in the league in scoring for 32 points -- including eight two-point goals.
