WISCONSIN SPORTS ROUND-UP: Lacy to represent Packers in Pro Bowl
Ellsworth Wisconsin 126 S. Chestnut St. 54011

GREEN BAY - The Green Bay Packers will have somebody at the Pro Bowl after all.  Running back Eddie Lacy was named today to the pool of players to be picked by team captains Deion Sanders and Jerry Rice for the January 26th NFL all-star game in Honolulu.

Lacy was the only Packer to be named as a "first alternate" when the player pool was named a few weeks ago.  He'll replace Adrian Peterson of Minnesota, who suffered from foot-and-groin injuries late in the regular season.  Lacy's selection guarantees that the Packers won't be shut out of the Pro Bowl for the first time since 2005.  Yesterday, Lacy was named the Pro Football Writers' rookie-of-the-year, after he rushed for a Green Bay rookie record 1,178 yards with 11 touchdowns this past season.  Lacy is the first Packers' running back to make the Pro Bowl since Ahman Green in 2004 -- and he's the first rookie rusher to be a Pro Bowler since John Brockington in 1971.  In an effort to make the game more interesting, the NFL scrapped the traditional NFC vs. AFC format -- and they recruited Rice and Sanders to choose players as captains.  The game's "draft" will take place next week.

All four teams in the NFC North Division can apparently move forward, now that a new coach appears to be set in Minnesota.  Multiple media reports said the Vikings have picked 20-year NFL assistant Mike Zimmer for his first head coaching job at any level.  ESPN said Zimmer and the Vikings were working out contract details today.  He's been the defensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals the last six seasons.  The 57-year-old Zimmer has also been with Dallas and Atlanta.  He appears to have filled the latter of two head coaching vacancies in the North Division.  Beloit native Jim Caldwell was hired yesterday to replace the fired Jim Schwartz in Detroit.  Marc Trestman is starting his second year as the head man in Chicago.  And Mike McCarthy is about to begin his ninth campaign in Green Bay.

The University of Wisconsin women's basketball team will try to end a two-game losing streak tonight, when it hosts Indiana at the Kohl Center in Madison.  The Badgers are 1-2 in the Big Ten, and 8-7 overall, after back-to-back losses to Michigan and Iowa.  The Hoosiers won 14 straight games to open their season, before they fell to Ohio State 70-61 at home last Saturday.  Indiana is 1-1 in the conference, with three freshmen leading the Hoosiers in their Big Ten contests.  Larryn Brooks has scored a total of 31 points in her last two games.  Redshirt junior Michala Johnson leads Wisconsin with 15-and-a-half points and close to eight rebounds per contest.  Badgers' senior Cassie Rochel has decided to red-shirt this season.  The 6-4 center has not played due to a lingering back problem.

Milwaukee Bucks' coach Larry Drew says his players need to make better decisions, in order to reduce the high number of turnovers they're committing.  The Bucks have the NBA's 22nd-highest number of miscues per game at 14.9 -- and they're tied for 14th in forcing turnovers by opponents with 14.4 a night.  Yesterday, Drew held a film session with the Bucks to show them the mistakes they made in Monday night's 22-point loss at Toronto.  Milwaukee committed seven turnovers in the first quarter, which helped the Raptors pull away early.  Drew says the Bucks have a very small margin-of-error.  He says it's not so much about the "X's"-and-"O's," as it is about reading and responding to specific situations.  The Bucks are 7-30 going into a home game tonight against Memphis, which is 18-19.  Drew says small forward Khris Middleton sprained his left ankle at practice yesterday, and he's questionable for tonight's contest.  The coach said forward John Henson made it through yesterday's practice okay.  He played 17 minutes against the Raptors on Monday, after missing seven games with a bad ankle.

The nation's top-ranked Division III men's basketball team will try to keep its undefeated record intact tonight.  UW-Stevens Point takes a 14-0 mark into a home contest against U-W Oshkosh.  The Pointers share the WIAC men's lead with Platteville, both at 5-0 in league play.  Platteville is at Number-eight Whitewater tonight.  Superior plays at Eau Claire.  And La Crosse is at Stout.  The WIAC women's teams have the same challengers on the opposing floors.  19th-ranked Oshkosh is at home against No. 23 Stevens Point. Eighth-ranked Whitewater travels to Platteville.  Eau Claire plays at Superior, and Stout is at La Crosse.  Whitewater leads the WIAC women's standings at 5-0.  Oshkosh and Stevens Point are tied for second at 4-1.

Concordia-Wisconsin will try to keep a one-game conference lead in its women's basketball race tonight.  The Falcons from Mequon are 9-1 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, as they get ready to play at Dominican.  Wisconsin Lutheran is in second place at 7-1.  They're at Concordia-Chicago this evening.  In other NACC women's action, Lakeland hosts Alverno,  Marian plays at Aurora,  Edgewood is at Rockford and the Milwaukee School of Engineering travels to Benedictine.  In the CCIW, the Carthage men are at home in Kenosha against 21st-ranked Wheaton.  The No. 14  ranked Carthage women travel to Wheaton.

Two Milwaukee Brewers have filed for salary arbitration.  But the team hopes to finalize new contracts by Friday, when they're scheduled to exchange one-year salary proposals with Marco Estrada and Juan Francisco.  It's a relatively quiet year on the arbitration front for the Brewers.  A total of 147 Major League players have filed for arbitration -- including last year's Cy Young winners Clayton Kershaw and Max Scherzer.  Most players agree on new deals before their arbitration hearings.  Only two Brewers have gone all the way with their proceedings since 1998.  In 2012, reliever Jose Veras lost his case but still made two-million dollars that year.  In 2010, Corey Hart won his arbitration and made $4.8 million.

University of Wisconsin junior Ivy Martin has been named the Big Ten Conference women's co-swimmer of the week.  She won the 50-yard freestyle at Southern California last week, and she guided the Badgers' 400-yard freestyle relay team to a first-place finish. Martin shared the weekly honor with Carly Mercer of Purdue.

___________________________

Parker Wolf of UW-Green Bay is the Horizon League women's swimmer-of-the-week.  Wolf won all four of her events in a dual meet against Illinois-Chicago -- the 50-and-100-yard freestyles, and the 200-medley and 200-freestyle relays.  Illinois-Chicago athletes won the other three weekly swimming-and-diving honors in the Horizon League -- swimmer Kei Ishimaru, and divers Whitney Johnson and Mark Ciesielski.
