WISCONSIN SPORTS ROUND-UP: Packers downed by Tennessee 20-16
NASHVILLE - A touchdown with five minutes left gives the Tennessee Titans a wet 20-16 preseason victory over Green Bay.
Rain fell through most of the game, making the ball slippery and the footing loose. Packers’ head coach Mike McCarthy held quarterback Aaron Rodgers, running back Eddie Lacy and eight other players out of the contest. McCarthy said he just wanted to see his three other backup quarterbacks and Rodgers would have played only one series anyway. There were eight fumbles in the game. Matt Flynn started and hit five-of-10 passes for 49 yards. Green Bay was leading 7-6 on James Starks’ TD when Flynn went to the sideline. Rajion Neal scored the other Packer touchdown on a 12-yard run. Scott Tolzein hit eight-of-12 passes for 124 yards. The next preseason game for the Packers is next Saturday in St. Louis.
Khris Davis and Carlos Gomez took former Brewer righthander Zach Greinke out of the park. Combined with Mike Fiers outstanding mound work, Milwaukee beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-1 at Miller Park Saturday. That expands the Brewers’ National League Central Division edge because Pittsburgh and St. Louis both lost. Fiers held the Dodgers to three hits in eight innings, striking out five to pick up his first win of the season. The only run he surrendered came on a homer by Adrian Gonzalez. Los Angeles made some noise in the ninth inning, Francisco Rodriguez got a groundout from Matt Kemp to claim his 35th save. Aramis Ramirez ran his hitting streak to 11 games in a row with a three-for-four night. The Brewers go for the sweep today, but they will be facing Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw. Jimmy Nelson takes the mound for Milwaukee.
Steve Stricker had another good three-under-par round at the PGA Championship in Louisville, but he is five shots off the lead going into today’s final round. Rory McIlroy leads the field at 13-under-par. His margin is one shot over Berndt Wesberger. The other remaining Wisconsin golfer in the field, Jerry Kelly, is tied for 42nd, 11 shots back. Kelly fired a one-under-par 70 Saturday.
Matt Kenseth starts eighth in today’s Cheez-It 355 at Watkins Glen, New York. Jeff Gordon won the pole for the race run on a road course. Paul Menard starts 20th and Beloit-born Danica Patrick begins the race in 43rd. Kenseth and Menard ran good races in Saturday’s Nationwide Series Zippo 200. Marcos Ambrose won, with Kenseth in fifth and Menard ninth.
Heather Lendway and Steven Mantell claimed first place in the USA Triathlon Olympic-Distance National Championships in Milwaukee Saturday. Mantell completed the 15-hundred meter swim, 40-kilometer bike and 10-kilometer run in one-hour, 50-minutes, 59 seconds. Lendway is from St. Paul. She finished in two-hours, five-minutes and seven-seconds.
