WISCONSIN SPORTS ROUND-UP: Packers hold rookie orientation camp

GREEN BAY – Over 58 players, including first-round draft pick Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, participated in yesterday’s Packers’ rookie orientation camp.

Head coach Mike McCarthy says Cinton-Dix, from the University of Alabama, is off to a good start. Coaches also noted good things from the Packers’ three drafted wide receivers, including former University of Wisconsin wide receiver Jared Abbrederis. The camp continues today.

Former University of Wisconsin running back James White has signed with New England. The Patriots announced the signing yesterday, along with Michigan wide receiver Jeremy Gallon. White was drafted in the fourth-round in last week’s NFL Draft.  Experts say he could make an immediate impact on the main roster.

Pitcher Kyle Lohse picked up his first win in three weeks, in a 4-3 Milwaukee win over the Chicago Cubs Friday afternoon. In seven innings of work, Lohse allowed three runs on seven hits and a strike out. Jean Segura had three hits and two RBIs in the win. Brewers and Cubs are back at it this afternoon, with Carlos Gomez possibly returning to the line-up. The center fielder served a three-game suspension and has been nursing a back injury.

Mary Massei’s sixth-inning home run lifted the University of Wisconsin softball team to a 1-0 win over SUNY-Albany in the first round of the NCAA Division I Tournament at the Eugene Regional in Oregon.  Cassandra Darrah was the winning pitcher. She struck out six and gave –up just four hits. The Badgers take on No. 1 ranked Oregon today.

The University of Wisconsin men’s track and field team held a big lead after the first day’s competition at the Big Ten Conference Meet in West Lafayette, Ind.  A top-three sweep of the 10,000-meter run plus a second place from weight thrower Mike Lihrman gave No. 14 ranked UW 32 points, 20 points ahead of second place Michigan. Reed Conner won the 10,000-meter run in 29:06.10, Mohammed Ahmed was second and Michael Van Voorhis finished in third. UW’s women’s team was also in first place with 16 points.  Emma-Lisa Murphy finished second for the Badgers in the 10,000-meter run and Gabriel Anzalone was sixth. Wisconsin got points from Angela Boushea’s fourth place in the hammer throw. The meet continues today through Sunday.
