WISCONSIN SPORTS ROUND-UP: State Div. III hoops teams win in playoffs

Three of Wisconsin’s Division Three schools have survived first-round action in the NCAA tournament.

Stevens Point survived an upset bid by Marian to advance into today’s second-round action against Central at Quandt Fieldhouse, 66-64. Marian’s Jeff Harris shot a potential game-winning three pointer with two seconds left, but the shot rimmed out… saving the game for the Pointers. Other wins include Whitewater over Northwestern College of Saint Paul (79-55) and Saint Norbert over Ohio Wesleyan (87-79).

UW-Milwaukee guard Jordan Aaron scored 20 points in a 74-57 rout over Valparaiso in the Horizon League tournament quarterfinals last night at the Resch Center. Forward Matt Tiby also had a good game, scoring 18 points and snagging seven rebounds. The win sets up an in-state showdown with top-seeded UW-Green Bay in the semifinals today. The Phoenix enjoyed a two-round bye as the top team in the tournament.

The University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team picked up their 20th win of the season Friday on the road at Penn State. It was all Badgers early, as Wisconsin led 3-0 halfway through the third period. That’s when Penn State’s Casey Bailey scored on the power play making it 3-1. Penn State’s Taylor Holstrom then scored after the Nittany Lions pulled their goalie at the 19-minute mark, making it 3-2. Shortly after that, Wisconsin’s Mark Zengerle picked up the empty net goal making it 4-2. The Badgers are now 20-9-2 overall, and 11-5-1 in the Big Ten with three road games to go in the regular season.

The No. 2 ranked University of Wisconsin women’s hockey team continues to struggle on offense as it lost a 1-0 game to No. 9 North Dakota at the WCHA tournament semifinals in Bemidji, Minn. Friday afternoon.  UW loss wasn’t due to lack of shooting as they had 35 shots the UND’s 24. Meghan Default scored the game’s lone goal late in the second period. The Badgers did not have a single power play during the game. Wisconsin goalie Alex Rigsby made 23 saves while winning goalie Shelby Aimsly-Benzie made 35. UND will play No. 1 Minnesota for the tournament title while Wisconsin, 27-7-2 overall, will await the NCAA Tournament pairings. The Badgers have lost two of their last three games.

Jeff Adrien’s double-double and career-high 20 points wasn’t enough to lift the slumping Bucks over the Pelicans last night. Milwaukee dropped its 49th game of the season, in a 112-104 wild loss in New Orleans. Bucks guard O-J Mayo was ejected in the first quarter, after a retaliation shove on Pelican’s center Greg Stiemsma. Officials called a flagrant foul after a video review… he was 0-for-one in shooting with one foul in three minutes of play.

Cody Decker hit a two-run double in his lone at-bat to lead the San Diego Padres to a 6-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers in Cactus League play. Alex Dickerson and Rico Noel both smacked solo home runs for the Padres. Xavier Nady and Alexi Amarista each went 1-for-3 and picked up an RBI.  Tyson Ross threw three hitless innings for San Diego and struck out three while only facing 10 batters. Scooter Gennett hit a two-run home run to provide the only offense for the Brewers, who only mustered three hits.  Milwaukee starter Matt Garza gave up three runs -- two earned -- on six hits through three innings.
