WISCONSIN SPORTS ROUND-UP: UW football team hires new running backs coach
Ellsworth Wisconsin 126 S. Chestnut St. 54011

MADISON - University of Wisconsin head football coach Gary Andersen has reportedly hired former University of Georgia tailback Thomas Brown to coach the football team’s running backs.

No official word has been issued by the University, but Brown’s Twitter account page was changed to a gameday picture of Camp Randall with several tweets of congratulations. Prior to his hire, Brown was an assistant coach for a season at Georgia, then became the running backs coach at both Chattanooga and Marshall. During his time at Marshall, three different running backs rushed for over 500 yards last season… leading the Thundering Herd to a Conference USA East Division title and a Military Bowl win over Maryland. Hiring Brown will also help UW’s plans to expand its recruiting efforts within the state of Georgia.

With spring training underway, the Milwaukee Brewers and Ryan Braun are looking to get past the dread of last season. Braun, who was suspended the last 65 games of the regular season, was also suffering from a thumb injury last season. After workouts yesterday, Braun says the thumb is feeling much better. Manager Ron Roenicke says trainers have been using a combination of glove padding and bats to relieve pressure on the injury.

The U.S. men’s hockey team, along with a couple Wisconsin natives, will look to rebound from the disappointment of yesterday’s 1-0 loss to Team Canada and snag some bronze. The team will face Finland this morning for the bronze medal. Madison native Phil Kessel, who was held quiet during yesterday’s semifinal game, will look to light the lamps up again. Kessel - along with former Badgers Ryan Suter, Derek Stepan and Ryan McDonaugh – will go for the bronze at 9:00 this morning.

The No. 8 ranked University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team won game one of its final home weekend series 5-2 over Michigan State in front of 10,000 fans at the Kohl Center in Madison Friday evening. The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the first period after a short-handed goal but Wisconsin rallied to take a 4-1 lead by the third period with goals coming from Michael Mersch on back-to-back power plays plus goals from Mark Zengerle and Brad Navin. Nic Kerdelis secured the win with an empty-net goal late in the third after MSU had scored its second goal. Winning goalie Joel Rumpel made 24 saves. Today’s game will face-off starting at 4 p.m. and is a sell-out.

The No. 2 ranked University of Wisconsin women’s hockey team bounced back from last weekend’s disappointment against Minnesota to win game one of their final regular season series 5-1 over Minnesota State in Mankato Friday.  The Badgers scored three third period goals after MSU scored a goal in the second to cut UW’s lead to 2-1.  Blayre Turnbull had two of those goals and Madison Packer also scored in the third. Rachel Jones and Brittany Ammerman had Wisconsin’s two first period goals. UW goalie Alex Rigsby made 20 saves. The series concludes this afternoon beginning at 3:07 p.m.

The No. 15 ranked University of Wisconsin wrestling team took a tough home loss to No. 8 Nebraska  Friday evening 22-15 at the UW Field House in Madison. The Badgers were without both senior starters Tyler Graff and Jackson Hein and it proved crucial, especially at Graff’s weight class where the Cornhuskers notched a pin. Wisconsin got a big win at 157 pounds when freshman Isaac Jordan upset No.1 ranked and previously undefeated James Green in overtime 3-1. This win tied the dual meet at 9-9 but the ‘Huskers won the next three matches after a break by big scores to take a 22-9 lead UW could not come back on. Also getting wins for UW were freshman Ryan Taylor at 125; freshman Jesse Thielke at 141, junior Tim McCall at 197 and sophomore Connor Medberry at heavyweight. The loss drops UW’s record to 12-5 overall and 5-2 in the Big Ten. Wisconsin will wrestle Iowa Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Madison in the final regular season dual meet.

University of Wisconsin weight thrower Mike Lihrman smashed all the records with his toss of 78 feet, 9 inches in the Red and White Open Meet Friday at the Camp Randall Memorial Sports Center in Madison. Lihrman’s mark set the facility, school, Big Ten and NCAA records and is one of the best throws in the world this year in indoor track. Both the No. 5 ranked UW men’s team and the women’s team easily won their respective meets which were tune-ups for next weekend’s Big Ten Indoor Championships in Geneva, Ohio.
