HOUSTON - The task facing the University of Wisconsin football team in tonight’s season opener is a huge one.  They will face one of the powerhouse teams from the nation’s strongest conference in the NRG Stadium in Houston.

The LSU Tigers are a perennial contender under coach Les Miles, including a national championship just a few years ago.  The Tigers bring a strong running game into the contest to test a Badger defense with eight new starters.  Initial glances would suggest Wisconsin’s defense could sneak up closer to the line of scrimmage after the graduation of a three-thousand-yard passenger and two receivers who caught more than one-thousand yards on their catches last season.  The SEC has won 44-of-74 games against the Big Ten over the last 20 seasons, counting bowl games. Kick-off is at 8 p.m. and the game is being broadcast by ESPN.

San Francisco scored three times in the first and rolled to an easy 13-2 win over the Brewers Friday night.  The Giants scored in each of the first five innings, including a five-run explosion in the fifth.  Despite the loss, the Brewers retained their one-and-a-half game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Central Division race.  Milwaukee starter Wily Peralta was hit early and hit hard, giving up nine hits and six runs in three ineffective innings.  The Giants pounded out a total of 19 hits and got a home run from centerfielder Gregor Blanco.  Ryan Vogelsong picked up his eighth win of the season.  Tom Fiers goes for Milwaukee tonight in a 9:05 p-m game.  San Francisco will answer with Jake Peavy.

Today at 5 p.m. is the deadline for the Green Bay Packers to reduce their roster to 53 players.  As the clock approaches that time, it will be interesting to see whether head coach Mike McCarthy keeps both quarterbacks Matt Flynn and Scott Tolzein as backups to Aaron Rodgers.  Tolzein has had a strong enough preseason that he likely couldn’t be stashed on the practice squad without another team picking him up.  It’s tough choice, because the roster spot taken up by the third quarterback could be used for someone to play on special teams.  McCarthy has already indicated he will mull his choices over right down to the deadline – even though this is a game week for the Packers.  They open the season Thursday night against the Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks in Seattle.

Just two months after an E-F-2 tornado ripped through UW-Platteville, the campus has been rebuilt just in time to welcome students back.  Construction is still going on at the football stadium, with repairs expected to take at least another week.  School officials are giving a lot of credit to the community.  Light standards were toppled and fences knocked down by the powerful storm.  Now, with classes starting next week, there is almost no sign of the storm’s passing – except at the stadium.  All should be in place by the first home game September 13th.

Kevin Harvick starts on the pole for Sunday’s Oral-B USA 500 in Atlanta.  That’s his sixth pole of the 2014 season – matching his total for his first 13 years on the circuit.  He edged Brad Keselowski.  Cambridge native Matt Kenseth starts 5th for the best take-off position for a Wisconsin driver.  He comes in to the race in fifth place in the Sprint Cup standings.  Beloit-born Danica Patrick takes off 27th and Eau Claire’s Paul Menard 33rd.  In his first race after taking some time off following a fatal accident, Tony Stewart starts 12th Sunday.

Milwaukee native Tim Smyczek has been knocked out of the U.S. Open tennis tournament in New York City by 17th-seed Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain in straight sets.  Agut beat Smyczek 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 Friday’s second round.  Smyczek had made it to the third round last year.

Jerry Kelly shot a first-round even-par 71 at the PGA Deutsche Bank Championship Friday.  This is the second week of the four-week Fed-Ex Cup playoffs.  Kelly is tied for 39th place in the competition near Boston.  If he can maintain the standing he will quality to move on to the third round next week.  Ryan Palmer shot an eight-under-par 62 for a two-shot lead.  On the Champions Tour, Rhineland native Dan Forsman is seven shots back after the first round of the Shaw Charity Classic in Calgary.  Forsman had a round of one-under-par Friday.  Tom Pernice Junior and Bart Bryant are tied at the top after shooting eight-under 62s.
