WISCONSIN SPORTS ROUND-UP: UW-Whitewater wins another Division III football title
Ellsworth Wisconsin 126 S. Chestnut St. 54011

SALEM, Va. - UW-Whitewater‘s mission to return and win this year’s Stagg Bowl: Completed. Quarterback Matt Behrendt threw for 249 yards and four touchdowns, in a 52-14 rout over Mount Union.

It’s the first time since 1989 that a Mount Union team was defeated by 20 or more points. Head coach Lance Leipold says the win was a significant way to put an exclamation point on an exciting season. The Warhawks end the season at 15-0 and hoisting a fifth national championship.

Two Big Ten rivals will face off in tonight’s showdown for the NCAA Division I volleyball national championship. The improbable Wisconsin Badgers are on a tear in this year’s tournament, including wins over Florida State, Purdue and top-ranked and defending national champion Texas. The Badgers will face a volleyball powerhouse in Penn State, who is looking for a sixth national title and first since 2010. First serve set for 8:30 tonight at Key Arena in Seattle. The match will be televised on ESPN2. UW looks to become the lowest seed ever to win a national title.

University of Wisconsin sophomore running back Melvin Gordon announced yesterday he will return for his junior season. The Maxwell and Doak Walker Award semifinalist says after talking with coaches and family, there is still room to grow at the University he loves. Gordon says with the decision out of the way, his focus now turns to preparation for the Capital One Bowl on New Year’s Day. Gordon amassed over 1,400 yards and 12 touchdown this season.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers will miss his seventh game this season. Head coach Mike McCarthy announced today that the injured quarterback (collarbone) has not been medically cleared, calling it a collective decision by the organization. Backup Matt Flynn will get the start tomorrow against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Lambeau Field. Despite all the injuries and an up and down season, the Packers can still winthe NFC North by winning out the rest of the regular season.

The Green Bay Packers are the only NFL team not to get an interception from one of its safeties -- and there's not much time left to change that.  Safety M.D. Jennings says he and his teammates talk a lot about that -- but they've vowed not to go chasing away from their required routes, and risk an opposing receiver burning a defender.  Jennings says nobody on the team likes the fact that the Packer safeties have no picks -- but at this point of the year, it's all about putting personal stats second and team victories first.  The coaches insist that interceptions will come if the Packers stick with their defensive schemes.  But there are only two regular season games left for that to happen -- Sunday at home against Pittsburgh, and December 29th at Chicago.

Kyrie Irving poured in a game-high 39 points and had six assists to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 114-111 overtime victory over the Milwaukee Bucks. Jarrett Jack netted 17 points, C.J. Miles had 15 and Earl Clark added 14 points for Cleveland, which stopped a two-game losing streak. Tristan Thompson scored 10 points and had 15 rebounds. O.J. Mayo scored 20 points and had seven rebounds, John Henson had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Brandon Knight added 17 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists for the Bucks, who have lost five straight. Khris Middleton contributed 14 points and seven rebounds. With his team trailing by four points in overtime, Mayo nailed a 3-pointer to bring the Bucks within one, 112-111, with 17.9 seconds left. Irving then knocked down a pair of free throws to put Cleveland back up by three with 10.3 seconds left. Mayo missed two three-point attempts that would have tied the game, one with 3.9 seconds left and the other as time expired.

Milwaukee Bucks' center Larry Sanders might return between the holidays. He's been out since November third, after he had surgery to repair a right thumb ligament he tore during a nightclub brawl in downtown Milwaukee.  Yesterday, Sanders worked out with Robert Hackett, the Bucks' strength-and-conditioning coach.  Coach Larry Drew says the 6-11 Sanders has been working out twice-a-day, and he's been working hard to get back into the swing of things. With only three available big men, Drew says he can really use Sanders right now.  Drew says Sanders is pretty close to returning.  The Bucks play at Cleveland tonight.  Sanders will have been out for six weeks on Monday.  He could be back for games next Friday night at Brooklyn, and the following Saturday night at home against Minnesota.

Bucks' forward Carlos Delfino is under doctor's orders to stay off his injured right foot for eight weeks.  He had a second operation last weekend, after he broke a bone in his right foot during last May's playoffs when he was with the Houston Rockets.  Delfino signed with the Bucks last summer for his second stint with the team -- but he has not practiced or played since signing.  Delfino's latest surgery was performed in his native Argentina by Donato Villani, the team doctor for the Argentine national team.  Delfino said a plate and two screws were removed, which were giving him a lot of pain.  A new screw was installed at a different angle, and Delfino said it's supposed to fix the bones that had spread apart.  Villani had performed the same surgery on several other Argentine athletes.  Delfino could not say if he could return this season.  He signed a two-year contract worth s$6.5 million dollars.
