WISCONSIN SPORTS ROUNDUP: Badgers on their way to the Capital One Bowl
The Wisconsin Badgers will be playing in a New Year’s Day bowl game this year. The 19th-ranked Badgers will play 9th-ranked South Carolina in the Capital One Bowl, pitting two of college football’s top defenses on display. The running tandem of Melvin Gordon and James White will face a very physical Gamecock’s defense, who’s allowing just over 200 yards in rushing per game. Tickets for the bowl game are available at UWBADGERS.com.
A late turnover in the fourth quarter helped the Green Bay Packers sneak past Atlanta in a 22-21 win yesterday. Matt Flynn threw for 258 yards, including the go-ahead 2-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Quarless with about 12 minutes left in the game. Falcons had a chance to take the lead with over six minutes to go, but kicker Matt Bryant missed a 52-yard field goal. The Packers managed to climb out of an 11-point deficit at halftime.
Wisconsin-native Steve Stricker placed 15th at the Northwestern Mutual World Golf Challenge in California yesterday. Stricker shot an even-72 in the final round, seven-over for the tournament. Zach Johnson was the eventual winner of the tournament, rallying back to stun Tiger Woods in a close playoff to determine a winner.
