For the first time in a while, none of Wisconsin’s P-G-A regulars are golfing in the British Open which began overnight at Muirfield in Scotland. Steve Stricker of Madison turned down the invitation, as he scaled back his schedule this year to do more at home. Stricker – the world’s 10th-ranked golfer – now admits it wasn’t the smartest thing to bypass the year’s third major, but he said he has a legitimate reason for skipping it. He’s celebrating his 20th wedding anniversary this week. Jerry Kelly of Madison and Pewaukee native Mark Wilson are not playing across the pond, either. Fox Point native Skip Kendall is in the P-G-A event this week, the Sanderson Farms Championship which begins today in Madison Mississippi. Kendall, a former regular on the Tour, has played in 14 tournaments this season in the second-tier Web-Dot-Com Tour. He’s 159th on the money list, with almost 11-thousand dollars in earnings.

Two Wisconsin golfers have advanced to the Round-of-32 at the U-S Amateur Public Links Championship in Lorton Virginia. Jordan Niebrugge of Mequon and Kyle Henning of Brookfield did well enough in their stroke play to advance to yesterday’s first round of matches. Niebrugge eliminated Michael Schmitmeyer of Saint Mary’s Ohio 4-and-3, and he’ll play Kyle Weldon of Saint Louis today. Henning came from behind to defeat Xander McDonald-Smith of New York two-up. Henning will take on P-J Samiere of Kailua Hawaii today.

In rowing, the Wisconsin Badgers will have three competitors on the U-S Under-23 national team that will compete in the World Championships in Austria next week. Kendall Schmidt and incoming junior Anne Rauschert will be part of the women’s-eight boat. Senior Michael Lindberg will be on the men’s lightweight-four squad. Schmidt was an All-Big Ten first team coxswain this year. She led the U-S women’s-eight to a gold medal in last year’s Under-23 tournament in Lithuania. This year’s championships begin next Wednesday in Linz Austria.
