Woman will lead road department -- for now
Pierce County's Highway Committee has chosen Laurie Lundgaard, a 20-year veteran of the department, to serve as interim highway commissioner.
The appointment will be on the agenda for ratification at the Tuesday, Oct. 28, county board meeting.
The committee is recommending Lundgaard fill in from Nov. 1, when Ross Christopherson retires, until a new commissioner is hired.
Christopherson, who has worked for the highway department since 1979 and has been highway commissioner for the last 15 years, announced his retirement in late September.
Lundgaard is currently the department's accounting manager. She said she will apply for the commissioner job once the application period opens.
Pierce County has never had a female highway commissioner, and Lundgaard said she is not aware of any other woman holding the job anywhere else in Wisconsin.
Lundgaard said her temporary appointment "... broke the (glass) ceiling a little bit, put a crack in it."
