STILLWATER, Minn. – St. Croix Crossing construction crews are making great progress out in the St. Croix River, with work underway at three of the five bridge pier locations, according to a press release issued late Thursday by a Minnesota Department of Transportation communications staffer.

As of Thursday, crews were forming the third of three sections to the bridge deck at Pier 8, continuing construction on the first of three sections to the deck at Pier 9 and were beginning to place forms and install reinforcement bar at Pier 12.

Four of the 23 approach piers on the Minnesota shore have already been built to their full height. Pile driving has resumed on the four pier footings that are yet to be completed.

Buoys that will mark the one-mile, restricted St. Croix River channel will soon be placed in the river. The narrowed channel near bridge construction is 300 feet wide and will be marked with buoys through fall 2016. Boaters are asked to continue respecting the no wake worker safety zone between Stillwater and Bayport throughout the summer boating season.

Other upcoming St. Croix Crossing project work includes the following:

-- North Frontage Road work between Northwestern Avenue and Osgood Avenue in Oak Park Heights will begin the week of May 12 through late June, weather permitting. Local resident and business access will be available at all times. The road will be open to vehicle traffic during construction, but it will be a gravel surface. Motorists may experience flaggers directing traffic through the work zone.--

Work to build the new Greeley Street north side intersection at Highway 36 will begin after North Frontage Road work is complete.

-- The north side of the Highway 36/Osgood Avenue intersection in Oak Park Heights will reopen to traffic on Saturday night, May 10. Lane shifts currently in place on Osgood Avenue north of Highway 36 will continue following the reopening of the intersection. Traffic on Osgood Avenue will use the west side of the road while crews complete utility work and road reconstruction on the east side. Traffic will then shift to the newly constructed lanes on the east side so crews can work on the west side. Night work also will cease after the intersection reopens, though additional night work for project activities is possible later in the season. Throughout 2014 construction, Highway 36 and Highway 95 in Minnesota will remain open. Access to businesses and residences will be available at all times.

-- Wisconsin Hwy. 35 overpass work continued this week as the contractor focused on placing concrete on the bridge abutment wing walls for the new WIS 35 overpass over WIS 64, placing mulch and seed on the new stormwater pond and moving dirt as part of project activities. The detour route received fresh pavement marking paint. During the week of May 12th, workers will be placing more concrete for the bridge abutment wing walls and removing additional dirt starting at the new interchange at County E.

Minnesota approach work will be substantially complete by the end of 2014 and the new St. Croix Crossing bridge/Wisconsin approach work will be complete in late summer/early fall 2016. When all work is finished, motorists will have smoother highway pavement surfaces, improved flow at intersections, an improved frontage road system—including safer access—and a new river crossing between Minnesota and Wisconsin. All of this will occur while maintaining or restoring the area’s cultural, historic and environmental resources.
