Working with kids brought joy to retiring Ellsworth teacher

For the first time in 83 years, the Birkel family won't be represented among the staff of Ellsworth schools this fall.

Kathy Birkel explained Friday her father-in-law, John, retired from the local district in 1982. He had begun teaching eight years after his brother, Stanley, did likewise in 1930, she said.

Now, the second grade teacher's ending the era with her own retirement at the conclusion of this school term. For her part, most everyone on her mother's side of the family had been involved in some aspect of education, and that influenced her career choice.
