The St. Croix Valley Habitat for Humanity’s 18-unit Eco Village now has a 4:30-5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 14, “official Gold Shovel Ground Breaking” ceremony set. The location for this unique housing project is West Maple Street and Apollo Road in River Falls.

The Eco Village, which will include a community education center, will be built on seven acres donated by the city.

The plan is to build six houses in the first year.

Supporters of The Eco Village say it will set a high bar for environmental sustainability, self-sufficiency and citizenship.

The energy efficient houses will have solar panels. Qualifying home owners must contribute 500 hours of their own labor – called “sweat equity.”

Much of the building materials are being donated. This keeps the project’s overall costs to a minimum.
