A section of US Highway 10 was closed for about five hours Thursday as debris fell onto the highway, causing significant damage.

According to Pierce County Construction Superintendent Jim Harris, a quarry was being blasted below the old waste site and subsequently rock fell onto the highway, damaging about 150 feet of road.

The closure happened between 450th and 490th St. in the town of Salem.

The Highway Department closed that section about 1:30 p.m. and reopened it about 6 p.m. Harris said the Department will began paving that stretch this week.
