A 29-year-old Ellsworth woman has been charged with one felony count of fraud against a financial institution for obtaining $23,500 from WESTconsin Credit Union by means of false representation, according to an article in Wednesday’s Eau Claire Leader-Telegram.

Sommer L. Robbins allegedly deposited money into a credit union savings account via checks written from a checking account in Ellsworth, the newspaper reported. However, the Ellsworth account didn’t have adequate funds to support the checks and frequently was overdrawn, the criminal complaint states.

Robbins told Menomonie police she had inherited $4.3 million. Of that amount, $3.5 million was invested and the rest was in checking accounts. She thought there were adequate funds to cover the checks she wrote to the credit union.

Police were unable to find a record of a fatal accident at a corporation involving the person from whom she claimed to have inherited the money.

The credit union reported the incident, known as “kiting,” saying Robbins deposited three checks at different branches in Menomonie and made $23,500 in cash withdrawals between April 17 and 23.
