The nine-county west central region of Wisconsin has outpaced the nation in housing and manufacturing job growth so far this decade, according to information from the Mississippi River Regional Planning Commission’s (MRRPC) annual report, issued late this spring.
Housing growth for both this region and the state showed a 10.3 percent change between 2000 and 2007, the information, shared by Pierce County Board Chairman Paul Barkla, indicates. That compares to a nine percent change throughout the U.S. during the same period.
Housing trends in Pierce County grew from 13,493 in 2000 to 15,130 in ’05 to 15,620 in ’07. For the region, they grew from 123,184 to 132,491 to 135,844 in those years and, for Wisconsin, from 2,321,157 to 2,500,779 to 2,559,229 in the same years. The nation’s housing trend growth went from 115,904,474 in ’00 to 126,316,181 in ’06 (the most recent year when statistics were available).
Manufacturing jobs in Pierce County increased from 1,019 in 2001 to 1,081 in ’05, the information shows, while their growth in the MRRPC region was from 23,879 to 24,343 over those five years. The state’s job growth rate fell from 573,370 in ’01 to 521,208 in ’03, then rebounded to 524,975 in ’05. For the U.S., the numbers were 16,994,600 in ’01, 15,063,000 in ’03 and 14,860,900 in ’05.
The change from ’01 to ’05 has the county at 6.1 percent and the region at 1.9 percent, but the state at -8.4 percent and the nation at -12.6 percent.
