Towns group offers student scholarships

For the 24th year, the Wisconsin Towns Association, with joint sponsors Rural Mutual Insurance Co., and Scott Construction, Inc., will offer scholarships to students graduating from Wisconsin Public or private high schools in 2009, who plan to attend a Wisconsin-based public or private college or vocational-technical institute.

For the 24th year, the Wisconsin Towns Association, with joint sponsors Rural Mutual Insurance Co., and Scott Construction, Inc., will offer scholarships to students graduating from Wisconsin Public or private high schools in 2009, who plan to attend a Wisconsin-based public or private college or vocational-technical institute.

Awarded will be:

  • Two $1,250 scholarships, one each for the highest ranking boy and the highest ranking girl winners from a member town or village with Rural Mutual coverage for their government as of May 1, 2009;

  • Four $1,000 scholarships — one each to two boys and two girls — and one scholarship to either a boy or a girl who has the highest ranking below the previous four scholarships.

All winners will be determined by an independent judging of an essay contest. Scholarship essay requirements are:

1. Entrants must prepare an essay addressing the following topic: “What should the role of town officials be in sustaining ‘working lands’ in Wisconsin?”

2. The typewritten essay should be between 500 and 1,000 words long and double spaced.

3. The completed essay should be mailed to: Wisconsin Towns Association, W7686 CTH MMM, Shawano, WI 54166-6086. Essays must be postmarked no later than May 27, 2009.

4. Be sure to include a bibliographic listing of sources used to obtain the subject material.

5. The applicant must be a 2009 graduating senior from a Wisconsin public or private high school, who plans to enroll in a Wisconsin public or private college or vocational-technical institute.
