PRESCOTT — Jake Filkins, a two-time state wrestling place winner for Prescott High School, will wrestle in college at the University of Minnesota.

Filkins has accepted an offer to wrestle for the Golden Gophers and joins an incoming freshman class that’s ranked sixth in the nation according to W.I.N Magazine. The class also includes Jake Kettler (Ramsey, Minn.), Bart Reiter (Gilbertville, Iowa), Pat Smith (Chaska, Minn.), Kevin Steinhaus (Pennock, Minn.), David Thorn (St. Michael, Minn.), Austin Waliullah (Rockton, Ill.) and Danny Zilverberg (Wayzata, Minn.).

“Jake is a great additions to what we believe is a very strong class,” Minnesota head coach J Robinson said in a press release. “He will add to the level of competition that already exists in the program and help propel us toward our ultimate goal, which is to consistently compete for national championships.”

Filkins is also a Cadet and FILA Cadet All-American in amateur competition outside high school. Filkins overcame a knee injury to make the state meet as a junior and was 34-0 going into this year’s state meet. He is a two-time Middle Border Conference champion and a three-time regional champion. He won his first sectional title this season.

“It’s a great honor to have coached and worked an athlete who will be competing at the Division 1 level in one of the best program’s and conferences in the nation,” PHS head coach Jeff Poliak said. “It’s also nice that we won’t have far to go to see Jake wrestle in college.”
