EHS girls win Fuller Invite, boys tie for second

For the first time, the Ellsworth High School girls track and field team was able to win the school’s own Fuller Invitational in full.

Last year the Panthers placed first in an abbrevated make-up meet. This time EHS won a full eight-team meet under partly cloudy skies and breezy conditions Friday at Fuller-Symes Field.

The Panthers edged Osceola in the team standings of the eight-school meet 144-140. New Richmond was third with 114 points.

For a squad that began the season with question marks about depth, the Panthers sure used their depth to win the meet. Freshman Lydia Kuhl was the only EHS athlete to place first in the Invite as she swept the hurdle events by winning the 100-meter highs in :17.16 seconds and the 300-meter lows in :49.78. She also place second in the long jump.

The Panthers had multiple place winners in seven events and in some of those had as many as three place winners.

“We starting to get multiple place winners and that’s been a pleasant suprise for us,” EHS head coach Craig Olson said. “To see so many events where we had not one but two and even three lace shows we had a heck of a performance. “

Ellsworth’s Carlie Melstrom had seconds in both the 200 and 400-meter dashes and Sabine Rudolph finished second in the pole vault. Both the Panthers 400 and 1600 relay teams were also second.

Prescott's girls team placed seventh with 52 points. The highest finish the Cardinals had was Kaycee Charette's 2nd in the 300-meter low hurdles.

Ellsworth’s boys’ team also had a good showing, tying for second place. New Richmond won comfortably with 169 points followed by the Panthers and Osceola with 102 points.
