Ellsworth survived to edge Plum City 4-3 and Elmwood lost to Hudson 12-2 in the first evening of action at the Ellsworth Hubber Cheese Curd Classic Tournament Friday.

Both contests were also St. Croix Valley League games so both contests went nine innings while tournament games are seven innings.

Elmwood vs. Hudson was game one. The Expos missed golden opportunity in the top of the fourth when they loaded the bases but didn't get a run across. In the fifth Hudson scored four runs and were on their way to a seven-inning win.

Former Expo Brent Blegen was 4-for-5 at the plate for Hudson with a solo home run and his River Rat teammate Joel Schaffer had three hit with a double and a home run.

Elmwood's Adam Churchill scored twice and hit a single. Eric Konsela also had a hit for Elmwood.

Ellsworth won its second straight one-run game vs. the Blues.

Brent Hove and Cody Holden had a pair RBI-doubles that put the Hubbers up 3-0 after three innings.

Holden had another RBI-double in the seventh for a 4-1 Hubs' lead.

In the top of the ninth, The Blues' Chris Biederman hit his second solo home run of the ballgame to make the score 4-3. PC put two on on two straight Ellsworth errors. But Sheldon Johnson was able to get the save. Mitch Johnson was the winning pitcher.

Elmwood will take on Plum City at 3:30 p.m. in the consolation round Saturday while Ellsworth will face Hudson at 5:30 p.m. The other games pit River Falls vs. Menomonie at 10 a.m. and New Richmond vs. St. Paul Mudhens at 12:30 p.m.
