Favre to remain retired

MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune Tuesday afternoon that Brett Favre informed him he will remain retired.
According to reporter Judd Zulgad, Favre told head coach Brad Childress that will not be joining the team when training camp opens in Mankato, Minn. later this week.
Favre had retired from the Packers in early 2008 but came back last fall to play with the New York Jets. He retired again last December but for the past few months had been in discussions with Viking coaches and officials and had gotten surgery on his shoulder in order to play this fall. He spent much of time working out with the local high school team in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
The Vikings are scheduled to play the Packers in the Metrodome Monday night, Oct. 5.
Minnesota begins training camp having to choose between Tavaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels for the starting quarterback job.
"It was the hardest decision I've ever made,' Favre told ESPN's Ed Werder. "I didn't feel like physically I could play at a level that was acceptable. I had to be careful not to commit for the wrong reasons. They were telling me, 'You went through all this, you had the surgery and you've got to finish it off.' But I have legitimate reasons for my decision. I'm 39 with a lot of sacks to my name."
However, according to a report in USA TodayFarve told friend and former coach Steve Mariucci that he still plans to continue to throw and work out, leaving the possible door open he could comeback in the fall after training camp to any team that would have him.
