The Ellsworth Rod and Gun Club and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will sponsor hunter education classes beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8.

The Ellsworth Rod and Gun Club and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will sponsor hunter education classes beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8.

The classes will continue on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Ellsworth Rod and Gun Club’s clubhouse, east of Ellsworth on Hwy. 72. They will be held beginning at 7 p.m. A field test will be held Saturday, Sept. 26, at 8 a.m. at the rod and gun club’s clubhouse.

A new student requirement has been announced. All students will now be required to obtain a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Customer ID as part of their criteria to graduate from any recreational safety class and provide that WI DNR Customer ID to their instructor. Students can obtain a DNR Customer ID between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. by calling 1-888-936-7463.

A parent or guardian must — without exception — accompany minors to the first class for registration. It’s suggested only students who will be 12 or older within six months of the end of class attend.

The course will consist of lectures, demonstrations, guest speakers, videos and range work. Students will be required to satisfactorily complete a workbook, field test and written test before they will be certified. Class graduates will receive a free small-game license for the year of their certification.

Certification is required for anyone born after Jan. 1, 1973, to buy a hunting license. Certification is transferable to other states.

There is a $10 registration fee for the classes. Class size is limited to the facility, which will accommodate 45.

Over 1,400 people have graduated locally from the course.
