Driver dead after crash with school bus in Vernon County

The driver of an SUV is dead after he rear-ended a school bus in Vernon County.

READSTOWN - The driver of an SUV is dead after he rear-ended a school bus in Vernon County.

The Vernon County Sheriff's Department says the accident happened at 7:10 a.m. Tuesday on Highway 14 in the town of Kickapoo, about four miles south of Readstown.

A school bus was stopped on Highway 14 with its warning lights flashing when the vehicle driven by 51-year-old Brian Starkey of Soldiers Grove crashed into the rear of the bus. Starkey was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff's department says nine students, ranging in age from four to 15, were on board, but none were injured. The bus was operated by the Kickapoo School District. Superintendent Thomas Simonson says the driver of the bus was not injured.
