The Twins and Tigers ended the regular season in a tie for the division lead. Minnesota swept Kansas City for three games in Minneapolis over the weekend, while Detroit lost two-of-three to the White Sox in Chicago.
The Twins crushed the Royals 10-4 Sunday, as Jason Kubel hit a pair of three-run homers. The Tigers stayed alive with a 5-3 win over the White Sox.
Ryan Rayburn hit two home runs, and Justin Verlander earned his career-high 19th win as the Tigers still have a shot at winning their first division crown since 1987.
Verlander led the league with 269 strikeouts, and he tied for the AL lead in victories.
It's the second straight year Minnesota's in a one-game playoff to decide the division.
The Twins earned home-field advantage by beating the Tigers in 11-18 games in 2009. Both teams went 86-76.
Tomorrow's winner goes against the New York Yankees in a Division Series on Wednesday.
The White Sox finished at 79-83, seven games in back of the Twins and Tigers.
