OSCEOLA - Ellsworth High School's girls' tennis team demonstrated the progress the program has made from a few years ago by tying for first place in the WIAA Division 2 Osceola Subsectional Monday.

The Panthers qualified all of its singles players for Wednesday's sectional meet in Durand, which begins at 9:30 a.m. This includes Nikki Marson at No. 1, Sabine Rudolph at No. 2, Claire Hines at No. 3 and Tiff Weiss at No. 4. It is one of the largest contingents Ellsworth has brought to a sectional meet in seven years.

Marson had to win just one match to advance to sectionals while Rudolph, Hines and Weiss all had two win two matches to move on. Marson has a 7-9 overall record while Rudolph is 9-8, Hines 9-5, and Weiss 11-3. No. 1 singles automatically make it to state with a win in sectionals while No. 2 teams qualify if the win two matches in a row. The WIAA also takes in extra qualifiers for the state meet Oct. 15-17 in Madison from each sectional.

Because the meet is a sub-sectional and not a regional, no team receives a plaque for finishing in first place, but a good result does show a team's prowess. The Panthers tied with Baldwin-Wooodville, each squad having 16 points.
