Prescott's Simones qualifies for state

Prescott cross country runner Victoria Simones finished second despite the bad weather at Friday's WIAA Division 2 Amery Sectional. That qualifies the freshman harrier for next weekend's state meet. It was part of a busy day for Prescott prep athletics.

Prescott's freshman cross country runner Victoria Simones finished second at the WIAA Division 2 Amery Sectional Friday, qualifying for the state meet.

Simones ran the 4,000-meter course in 16:47. Amery's Natalie Haugerud won the race and Somerset's Ontario Belter finished third and they too will run at the state cross country meet next Saturday in Wisconsin Rapids.

As a team, the Cardinals girls placed 10th out of 17 schools in the sectional. The boys' squad placed ninth led by Zach Sobolewski's 42nd place finish and Jordon Wood's 43rd place finish, both with time of 20:15. PHS' Nick Helberg was 49th in 20:20 on the 5,000-meter course.

Osceola's Andrew Rohlman won the race while St. Croix Central's Brett Johnson finished second to both qualify for state.

Later in the evening, Prescott's volleyball team took on No. 1 ranked Grantsburg in Grantsburg in WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal match. The Pirates won in three straight.
