The Elmwood School District is the recipient of a $5,000 grant from the Wisconsin Environmental Board.

That topic and more was discussed by the school board recently.

The grant was earmarked for the School Forest Education Plan, which the board approved, and the School Forest. According to Superintendent Adam Zenner, the question for the district now is how to further enhance the School Forest/Nature Trial for educational purposes.

In other topics, the board:

—Held further discussion on the naming of the softball field after longtime Coach Jerry Cognetta. Current Softball Coach Kim Webb presented the board with a petition signed by over 160 community members and 60 non-community members in support of the request. The board told those in attendance that, while they’re not diminishing Cognetta’s achievements, a policy needs to be established before they start naming portions of the district. Zenner classified this issue as “not tabled, just put on the shelf.”

  • Heard a presentation from High School English Teacher Steve Renfree on the benefits of “Moodle,” an online educational tool allowing students and their parents the capability to access coursework, grades, daily lectures and textbooks. Renfree also touched on the features for administrators and teachers. Currently, four other teachers at Elmwood besides Renfree have “Moodle” pages.

  • Accepted the resignations of Robert Bock as daytime custodian, and the hires of Daniel Beyer and Jessica Handorf as daytime and nighttime custodians, respectively. Becky Baier was also approved as the assistant varsity girls’ basketball coach.
