Butterflies star of insect unit

The first science unit in second grade this year was on insects. One of the highlights of the unit was raising Painted Lady Butterflies. Each classroom received a jar containing five larvae. Just like the book, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle, our larvae ate and ate and ate and ate until they grew to be five times their original size.

Once they were full, they each formed a perfect chrysalis. The pupa inside each chrysalis took about two weeks to form and change into the adult butterflies that hatched right in our classroom.

After feeding them sugar water and watching them for a few days, we took them outside and released them into nature. It was hard to say goodbye, but great to see them grow up!
