Badger men hoops' open Maui Classic tonight, Badger women win
Wisconsin Sports- The Wisconsin men's basketball team gears up for the Maui Classic this week while the UW women's team gets a last-second win over Cleveland State.
Wisconsin men’s basketball team will play Arizona tonight in their first game at the Maui Invitational in Hawaii. The tip-off is at 11 o’clock. Both the Badgers and Arizona are 2-and-0.
Wisconsin won their games with solid defense, holding Oakland and Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne to 44 points per contest. Their opponents shot a combined 30-percent from the floor, and only 19-percent from three-point range.
But the Badgers have not handled the ball as well as coach Bo Ryan would like. They have more turnovers than assists – 28-to-24. Also, the Badgers are just 9-of-32 from beyond the arc.
Arizona is a relatively young team. They have a first-year coach in Sean Miller, and three freshmen are among their top five scorers
The Wisconsin women’s basketball team came from behind yesterday to beat Cleveland State, 70-to-68 in Madison.
The Badgers were down by 15 with less than two minutes to go in the first half. But Wisconsin pulled within three with a 15-to-5 run midway through the second half. Taylor Wurtz put the Badgers in front for good with a jump shot in the paint with 1:39 left.
Alyssa Karel led Wisconsin with 14 points. Shawnita Garland scored 23 for Cleveland State, which fell to 1-and-2. The Badgers improved to 3-and-0, and they’ll host UW-Green Bay tomorrow night.
