Local school libraries 'Say Cheese'

Based on the adage “a picture is worth a thousand words,” the Campaign for Wisconsin Libraries has created a visual way to remind people of the variety and wealth of resources, services, programs and activities their library offers—benefits continuing to bring more and more people through the library’s front door each day.

Based on the adage “a picture is worth a thousand words,” the Campaign for Wisconsin Libraries has created a visual way to remind people of the variety and wealth of resources, services, programs and activities their library offers—benefits continuing to bring more and more people through the library’s front door each day.

All the Ellsworth school libraries participated in the Wisconsin Libraries Association “Wisconsin Libraries Say Cheese! A Day in Pictures” Nov. 2–5. Students at Ellsworth High School, Ellsworth Middle School, Hillcrest and Prairie View elementary schools had photos taken and were treated to Ellsworth cheese curds, donated by the Ellsworth Cooperative Creamery.

Knowledge of cheese and cheese production at the local creamery were shared with students, along with reminding the students of all the free resources the school and the public library offers.

Yearly statistical information for the school libraries are (school, number of books, circulations):

—Prairie View Elementary, 7,986, 14,751;

—Hillcrest Elementary, 8,663, 18,550;

—Ellsworth Middle School, 10,241 , 41,403;

—Ellsworth High School, 10,970, 8,672.

Program organizers hope to capture more of the “full picture” of library usage, along with the essence of what libraries are today, through the online sharing of photos from different libraries throughout the state. The goal is to strengthen libraries’ existing base of support by presenting a better understanding of the kinds of resources, services and programs libraries offer today. Yearly, using the web resource Flickr, the project will share the digital photos libraries across Wisconsin took on one day during the week of Nov. 1-8.
