ELMWOOD - New Elmwood High school head girls basketball coach John Pollock lost his first contest with the Raiders Monday vs. Alma-Pepin 52-41.
The Raiders did play competitively. They were tied with the Eagles 16-16 after the first quarter. They cut into an 12-point lead with a late run in the second quarter to trail only 31-23 at halftime and outscored A-P by a 10-6 margin in the third quarter only to trail 37-33 heading into the fourth.
But fatigue and Alma-Pepin's superior depth spelled Elmwood's doom in the final eight minutes. The Eagles went on an 11-0 run to take a 48-33 lead thanks to an effective press and the Raiders struggles at the free-throw line where they were only 14-for-25. A-P also had nine players score compared to EHS' five.
EHS never quit and made a late 8-2 run to cut the lead to nine at 50-41.
Elmwood was led in scoring by Christina McKune with 14 poinst while freshman McKayla Brunner, playing in her first varsity contest, had 13 points.
"We missed our opportunities and certainly fatigue hurt us, but I can't ask for much more as far as effort goes." Pollock said.
Alma-Pepin's leading scorer was Sophia Reidt with 12 points.
