Dog breeders in Wisconsin will soon be licensed, in an effort to eliminate large puppy mills where dogs have been known to be abused-and-neglected.
Governor Jim Doyle signed the licensing mandate into law today (Tuesday). It requires breeders with more than 25 dogs to be licensed by the state each year.
They’ll have to meet certain standards of care – and violations can result in licenses being revoked. Pet advocates have tried for years to pass the new law. They say Wisconsin’s lack of previous regulations have attracted puppy mill owners from other states.
