The team did not announce either contract, because the players must still pass physical. But general manager Doug Melvin said he was happy with what he accomplished. He said he’d like to get another starter, but he’ll take a step back and review the free-agent market and possible trades.
Hawkins will be 37 in January. He went 1-and-4 for Houston last season, but his E-R-A was just two-point-one-three in 65 relief appearances. And when Astros’ closer Jose Valverde got hurt, Hawkins converted 11-of-15 save chances. He’s expected to be a set-up man for Milwaukee – and perhaps a closer’s back-up should Trevor Hoffman get hurt.
