MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota Twins traded right-hander Boof Bonser to the Boston Red Sox on Thursday for a player to be named later.
After missing all of last season recovering from surgery to repair tears in the labrum and rotator cuff of his pitching shoulder, Bonser was designated for assignment on Tuesday by the Twins to make room on the 40-man roster for Carl Pavano, who accepted the team's arbitration offer.
Bonser started experiencing pain in the shoulder at the end of the 2008 season, but an MRI performed at the time showed no structural damage. Rest and rehabilitation was prescribed for the veteran, which proved unsuccessful.
The 28-year-old Bonser received a cortisone shot prior to reporting to the club's spring training facility last February, but the problem did not subside.
Over three seasons with Minnesota, Bonser boasted an 18-25 record with a 5.12 earned run average in 96 games, including 60 starts.
In 2008, he went 3-7 with a 5.93 ERA over 47 contests, starting 12 of those games.
