INDIANAPOLIS - The Milwaukee Brewers appear to be close to re-signing veteran infielder Craig Counsell.
General manager Doug Melvin met with Counsell’s agent before the Major League Winter Meetings ended yesterday in Indianapolis.
There are reports that the Brewers increased their offer. Melvin said Counsell is a big part of the Brewer organization – he had a good year in 2009 – and he has a positive impact on other players. And Melvin said Counsell, a native of Whitefish Bay, is also a big part of the community. He hit .285 this past season with 39 RBI’s and four homers in 130 games – and he led the team with eight triples. Meanwhile, the Brewers have until tomorrow to decide which of their un-signed players will not be offered contracts for next year.
Among those rumored to be dropped are relievers Seth McClung and Mark DiFelice. That’s after the team re-signed Claudio Vargas and added LaTroy Hawkins in recent days.
