Elmwood tops rival Plum City 49-44

The Elmwood High School Boys' Basketball team won a hard-fought, physical and emotional battle with Plum City Tuesday night 49-44.

ELMWOOD - The Elmwood High School Boys' Basketball team won a hard-fought, physical and emotional battle with Plum City Tuesday night 49-44.

Missed opportunities cursed the Devils to defeat. The Raiders committed the first seven fouls in the ballgame yet the Blue Devils only managed to tie Elmwood 5-5 after the first quarter and trailed 25-22 at halftime.

In the second half, Plum City took a one-point lead 28-27 after a three-pointer by Shawn Ingli but Elmwood scored two quick baskets in succession to regain the lead 31-27. Plum City tied the game at 35-35 with 6:29 to go in the fourth quarter on a three-pointer by Alex Hartung. But the Raiders' Josh Pax sank a three of his own to give the home team a five-point lead at 40-35. He led all scorers with 17 points and made four key free-throws late in the final quarter.

Plum City had no one in double figures in scoring. Hartung led the way with nine points. Chase Luebker finished with seven points and Ryan Flynn had six points to go with 10 rebounds and five blocked shots. Luebker finished with a team-high 11 rebounds.

The foul count turned against the Devils in the second half as several of their players had to go out due to foul trouble.

Plum City lost its third game in a row to drop to 2-3 overall and in 1-3 in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference. Elmwood improved to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the league. The Blue Devils are off until Friday when they take on St. Croix Central for Alumni Band Night at Plum City.
