GREEN BAY - Green Bay linebacker Clay Matthews finished third in the voting for the NFL’s defensive Rookie-of-the-Year. Houston linebacker Brian Cushing won the AP’s award in a landslide.
Cushing, Matthews’ college teammate at USC, got 39 of the 50 possible votes. Buffalo safety Jairus Byrd took second with six votes. Matthews had three votes.
Cushing had 133 tackles with five sacks, four interceptions, and two forced fumbles. Matthews finished the regular season with 58 tackles, including a Packer rookie record 10 sacks. He also had three fumble recoveries and a forced fumble.
Packers’ general manager Ted Thompson said Matthews has accomplished a lot in just one year – but he would not say Matthews was snubbed in the award voting. Thompson traded up to get Matthews in last April’s draft – and he said he was pleased to do it.
Today, the Packers will start practicing for their playoff opener on Sunday at Arizona.
